The first question a distributor asks is which pickleball products to stock. The better question is in what order - because the sequence decides your freight cost, your cash cycle and how much of your warehouse is dead stock by spring.
Three waves, each triggered by evidence rather than by a supplier's catalogue.
Paddles, balls and nets. They have the clearest demand, the simplest specification, and they are what a club or a school asks for first. Open with one or two paddle models - a thermoformed carbon fibre paddle for your better players and a fiberglass paddle for entry - plus 40-hole outdoor balls and one indoor option.
Apparel, footwear, bags and caps. Lower unit cost, higher margin percentage, higher repeat rate - and the categories that make a shop look like a pickleball shop rather than a paddle bin. This is also the wave where your reorder cycle shortens dramatically.
Court flooring, nets and net systems for venues, scoreboards, court marking line sets, training gear. These are not impulse lines, but they are the lines that get you a listing with a club, a council or a court builder - and once you are the supplier who fitted the court, you are also the supplier of everything on it.
| Category | Why it earns shelf space | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Paddles | Highest average order value; the product customers research most | Core thickness and weight must match your market, not the factory default |
| Balls | Consumable, so it reorders itself | Indoor and outdoor are different products - do not substitute one for the other |
| Nets and net systems | Sells with paddles to clubs, schools and families | Freight weight; confirm carton dimensions before you price it |
| Bags | Attaches to every other category as a bundle | Model count adds up quickly - start with two shapes |
| Footwear | High repeat rate, hard to buy well online | Sizing runs and MOQ per size break |
| Apparel | Margin and brand feel; team and club orders | Size curve planning and seasonal colour timing |
| Eyewear and protection | Small, light, high margin, easy add-on | Impact and anti-fog claims need supporting test data |
| Grips and overgrips | Cheapest way to raise average order value | Colour assortment: three colours outsell ten |
| Scoreboards and scoring | Sells to clubs, leagues and event organisers | Confirm battery and mounting options for your market |
| Court markings | Pairs with every net order | Check the surface it is specified for |
| Training gear | Coaches and academies buy in sets | Explain the use case or it will not sell |
| Court flooring | Highest ticket, opens venue and institutional accounts | Roll size, tile format and installation method must be quoted together |
Five suppliers means five MOQs, five lead times, five inspection standards and five sets of cartons arriving on different dates. It also usually means five LCL shipments, and LCL is where margin quietly disappears.
One supplier for a mixed container changes the arithmetic: paddles, balls, net systems, bags, apparel, footwear and accessories in one booking, one inspection, one bill of lading. You pay for one container instead of five part-loads, and you open the season with a complete range instead of half of it.
For venues and institutional buyers, the same logic applies one level up: a PVC sports floor, a custom printed court surface, the net system, the markings and the scoreboard come from one supplier with one delivery date.
