Every buyer asks the same first question: what is your MOQ? The answer you get usually sounds like a policy. What you actually need to know is which parts of that number are negotiable, which parts are physics, and how to buy enough to judge a supplier without locking up your cash for a quarter.
A first order is not a purchase, it is an experiment. You are testing four things at once: whether the product matches the photo, whether the packaging survives a container, whether the lead time was honest, and whether the person answering your emails still answers them in month three.
None of those questions require volume. What they require is a configuration that is identical to your future mass-production order - same material, same printing method, same packing - so the answer you get is transferable.
MOQ is not one number set by one person. On a pickleball paddle it is the sum of three separate constraints, and only one of them is about you:
Material and tooling. A mould, a press or a printed plate exists in a fixed size. Below a certain quantity the cost per unit stops making sense for anyone.
Printing method. A plain paddle and a paddle with a four-colour UV print do not share a minimum. More colours, more passes, more setup.
Packing. A poly bag is not a colour box. Custom retail packaging has its own minimum at the printer, often higher than the product minimum itself.
This is why a supplier who answers MOQ with one number is usually guessing - and why the same supplier will often quote you a much lower number once they know you are willing to start with stock packing.
| Product | Where it typically starts | What you should confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Adult paddles, no logo | From 50 pcs | Weight, core thickness, grip, carton quantity |
| Paddles with your logo | Set by the printing method | Colour count, artwork file, one-off setup cost, printed sample |
| Pickleballs | Usually quoted by the carton | 26 vs 40 vs 48 holes, USAPA status, colour, logo printing |
| Bags, nets, apparel, flooring | Most flexible when combined into one order | Packaging spec, mixed-SKU rules, carton dimensions |
Our own standard is 50 pcs on adult paddles without custom printing, and we keep that number public because it is the number buyers actually plan around. Balls move by the carton. If you want a mix of paddles, balls and bags in one container, we quote the combination rather than each line in isolation.
One hero SKU, two cartons. Not five SKUs at one carton each - you learn more from depth than from breadth.
One secondary SKU to see whether quality holds across lines. Add our 40-hole rotational moulded competition ball if you are opening with paddles.
The exact packaging you intend to sell in. A trial that ships in a plain carton has tested nothing about retail.
A printed sample approved before production. Once you approve it, that sample is the mass-production standard - not a marketing description of it.
An inspection report with photos before the goods leave the factory, against AQL 2.5.
A landed cost, not just an FOB price. Ask for DDP once, so you can see freight, duty and delivery in the same table as your unit cost.
Free: artwork proofing. Send a logo, get a mockup of it on the product before you commit.
Refundable: a custom sample with your logo, credited against the bulk invoice once the order is confirmed.
One-off, not refundable: setup and printing plate costs, and any new tooling for an original design. These are real costs paid to a factory, so treat them as part of your product development budget.
What is the MOQ on this exact configuration, with printing and this packaging?
Which sample becomes the production standard, and do I approve it in writing?
Is the lead time counted from the deposit or from sample approval?
Who inspects before shipment, against which standard, and do I get the report?
If five per cent of the cartons are defective, what do you do?
A supplier with a process answers those in one email. A supplier without one answers the first question and hopes you forget the rest.
Standard mass production runs 25-35 days after the pre-production sample is approved and the deposit clears, and small trial orders are welcome - most of our long-term partners started with one. If you want to test the thickness question first, our custom T700 carbon fibre paddle is available in 11, 13, 14 and 16 mm so you can compare feel before you commit to a range, and the fiberglass paddle covers the opening price point of the same order.
If you sell to beginners or schools, the kids paddle range is EN71 certified and can ride in the same container, and a paddle bundle set is often the simplest way to test whether a market wants equipment packs rather than single paddles.
